Taiwan - Hualien

Sunday, March 3, we traveled by train and bus to Hualien, on the east coast of Taiwan.  After lunch, our first stop was a park with some nice (manmade) ponds.  Sarah (and Charlotte) took the opportunity to ham it up for the camera.

Uh no, that's not my wife...

Next stop was Li Chuan Aquafarm, a freshwater clam farm.  Aviva had a great time feeding the fish, though it was too cold for us to go clam digging ourselves.  And unfortunately, the restaurant was out of the clam-flavored ice cream.
Mmmmm, delicious...

We demolished a plate of stir-fried clams with basil and chiles in a few minutes.

On Monday, we toured Taroko Gorge National Park, which included some truly stunning vistas of the river flowing through the gorge.  For more great photos of our trip, click here and here to see my sister Sarah's blog.

We "hiked" in a couple places around the Gorge.  Aviva was very happily wearing her new overcoat and matching hat, lovingly brought from the US by Ama.  I call the ensemble her Doctor Zhivago Outfit.

I highly recommend the hotel where we stayed, Bulowan.  It felt like we were at a luxury camp nestled into the mountains.  All of the cabins faced a huge meadow, and the views were beautiful.
